System Requirements

Computer Hardware and Software Needs. A computer with Internet access and an Internet browser, such as Internet Explorer or Netscape, is needed. The browser is software that allows you to view pages on the World Wide Web. You will need version 5.5 or higher of Internet Explorer (for Macintosh, do not use versions 4.01 or 4.5 for Macintosh) or 6.0 or higher of Netscape to enter data efficiently and to download the documents that are on the system such as this Users’ Manual. You can download either one of these browsers from the Internet by clicking on the Download hyperlink on the Homeroom Page (see "Data Security" below). You will also need software to read and download PDF files such as the paper incident reporting form. For this purpose, you can download the most recent version of Acrobat Reader from the Homeroom Page.

Data Security and the Possible Need to Update your Computer’s Browser. The Technology Survey website is secured with the highest level of encryption technology. Encryption ensures that a third party will not be able to view the information that you send the department while it is in transit. Security of the information once it arrives at the department’s server is ensured by a "firewall" of protective software.

The browser that is currently on your computer may not be capable of processing the encryption software that the department is using. Make sure your version is sufficiently recent (see details above). You can download the latest version of either Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape from the Internet by clicking on the Download hyperlink on the Homeroom Page. If you are connecting to the Internet through a modem, allow at least two hours to download current versions of a browser such as Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape onto your computer.

Responding to Questions from the Encryption Software. When you click on the button "Enter " you may receive a prompt warning that you are about to view pages over a secure connection. Click "OK" or "Yes" to continue.

First Steps. Connect to the Internet (if you have a modem connection) and start up your Internet browser. In your Internet browser, enter this address as the Uniform Resource Locator (URL): http://homeroom.state.nj.us. Note the letters "www" are not included in the address. After typing in the address, hit the Enter (or Return) key on your keyboard.
